A new arts organization was born in Flagstaff in the summer of 2015. Art 35º North ("Art35N") has formed with the goal of sharing Fine Art across the Colorado Plateau. By bringing together artists from not only Flagstaff, but also Winslow, Williams, and other nearby towns, Art35N is building a new creative energy. Further, Art35N’s relationship with the Coconino Center for the Arts will share the art and experience of these members with visitors from all over Arizona.
Art35N is a juried organization. This means that potential juried member Artists must apply for membership, and must prove a high level of artistic expression and technical skill in order to gain entrance into this professional group. Regular memberships are also offered. These members are eligible for workshops, classes and art education offered to the members by the juried member Artists.
Art35N is currently focusing on the A New Latitude 2016, which will kick off an unprecedented three month group exhibition at the Coconino Center for the Arts paired with Art Tours in Williams and Flagstaff. While Flagstaff has previously enjoyed an August studio tour, the growth in the local art scene has raised demand for another opportunity for visitors to meet artists in their studios. According to John Tannous, Executive Director of the Flagstaff Arts Council in reference to pairing art tours with the exhbition, “Artists appreciate the second opportunity to engage with audiences, and we know audiences will, too.”
Working with the community is important to Art35N. Ruth Ann Border, a founding member, talked about a vision for sharing art with the Flagstaff area when she said “As important as art is to learning and living, we hope that Art35N can establish an on-going community relationship.” In addition to the Art Tours of A New Latitude in June, “we will embrace working studio tours” she said. Excitement is also building for an upcoming program of workshops that will be open to the community. Members include painters, ceramic artists, printmakers and sculptors, so the Flagstaff area will have the chance to experience art-making in a wide range of mediums. The organization is accepting applications from new regular members year round. Juried member review will be held in the Fall of 2016.
