Debbie Shepard's botanical illustration in color pencil, marker, pen and ink emerged from a love of gardening and featured plants she found in the Flagstaff area when she moved here in 2005. She studied sumi-E Japanese brush and ink technique with a master in Nyack, NY back in the 90's and produced many portraits of birds when picking up the brush again. She produced a series combining landscape images with botanicals for her Arb-inspired Art Show in 2009. With an active color pencil group in Tucson, Debbie was introduced to assorted techniques in color pencil by attending workshops and out of that came many northern Arizona landscape scribble vertiramas and panoramas. Using an Icarus board that melts the wax binder in color pencil, she created a series on Mylar using two sides of the paper based on Chihuly's glass pieces at the Desert Botanical Garden in Phoenix, AZ. Fascinated with Zentangles (drawing patterns one stroke at a time) Debbie incorporated this on top of older botanicals to give them a fresh new look and feel which she called Botangles. For a winter show in 2015 at La Bellavia, she created a special series of Flagstaff Train Graffiti using Zentangles as well as many Tangled Tattoos, both popular themes in the Flagstaff area. She is now a Certified Zentangle Teacher which she will use with her new venture in an initiative called Creative Aging and Creative Cohousing Initiative that resulted from attending ArtBox2015. ZiA Jewelry 4 All is the latest in a creative journey that will be debuted at the ART35N New Latitudes show and tour.
