Leancy B. Rupert IV An Uncommon View of the Ordinary
Artist Statement Art is a way to celebrate my journey. Becoming an artist is a major change of direction in my life, but I embrace and explore it. Art is a way to share a piece of myself with other people. It provides an outlet to express myself and communicate visually. A new journey develops within each process.
I create in paint, clay, metal and film. I am currently focused on my sculpture projects, developing themes of rhythm and repetition to depict movement and the passage of time.
For my sculptures, I find the potential for art in ordinary and discarded objects. Focusing on what I have rather than what I don't, I collect objects that have the potential to be altered or combined to create something new. I never search for something specific, but am always looking. The objects that I work with often meld themselves to each other, finding their natural fit.
I am open to what the process reveals. Sometimes, the original vision is maintained. Other times it will shift from the initial concept and take a different direction than I envisioned. It's not about following a specific road map, but to work through the problems to find solutions along the way until I reach the destination.
We live in a fast moving world. People often pass by without looking. We move through life so quickly that we do not see what is right in front of us. My purpose is to make people Stop. Look. And See.
